A Life Lesson From a Six Year Old

Today my girls and I were headed to church. We all love the church that we attend. On the way there Kinsey asked me if I liked a certain individual. My response was that " I don't much care for that person". Kinsey was a little taken aback. She said with a certain tone of disbelief "Daddy why don't you like that person?" I explained that it's not that I didn't like them, I just didn't care for them because I didn't think they were honorable. The question that I fully anticipated came... "What does honorable mean?" she asked. I told her that was when somebody knew the right thing to do and chose to not do it. She thought about that for a minute and said "Daddy, you're not honorable". I was completely floored and immediately saddened by her assessment of me. I had to know why she thought I wasn't an honorable man. Her answer was simple, pure and innocent. She told me that God wants us to care for everybody and if I chose to not care for somebody, I was choosing to do something other than that which I knew to be right. Her insight was profound and hit me in the heart. She was right and I told her so. Today I learned a valuable life lesson from my six year old daughter. How humble I feel knowing that we are all God's children worthy of being cared for regardless of perceived short comings or trangressions and I had to be reminded of this by a child. I respect her fresh and wonderful vision of humanity. I love her even more tonight knowing the depth of her beautiful heart. What a beautiful gift my daughter gave me today.
